Lead Poisoning in Children:
2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic Acid (DMSA) powder is primarily indicated for treating lead poisoning in children with blood lead levels exceeding 45 µg/dL. While effective for treatment, DMSA is not approved for the prophylactic prevention of lead poisoning in environments with known lead contamination. The elimination half-life of DMSA ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 hours. It can cross the blood-brain barrier in mice but not in humans, restricting its use to removing heavy metals from parts of the body other than the central nervous system.
Heavy Metal Provocation Testing:
Another application of DMSA is in provocation or "challenge" tests for tissue heavy metals prior to a urine test. These tests aim to mobilize heavy metals stored in body tissues, increasing their excretion in the urine.
