Function
Phycocyanin is a pigment from the phycobiliprotein family, which includes allophycocyanin and phycoerythrin. These pigments act as accessory pigments to chlorophyll, enhancing the light-harvesting efficiency of photosynthetic organisms.
Key characteristics of phycocyanin and its relatives:
- Water-Solubility: Unlike carotenoids, phycobiliproteins are water-soluble and cannot reside within the lipid membranes. Instead, they form aggregates known as phycobilisomes that attach to the membranes.
- Light Absorption and Emission: Phycocyanin is notable for its distinctive light blue color. It absorbs light most efficiently in the orange-red spectrum, particularly around 620 nm, and fluoresces at approximately 650 nm. Allophycocyanin, another member of this family, absorbs and emits light at longer wavelengths than phycocyanin.
